FAA Reverses Course On Los Angeles Sports Complex

Says Proposed Stadium Does Not Pose Any Risk To KLAX Traffic

The FAA has determined that a proposed football stadium in Inglewood, CA which sits directly in the flight path for KLAX in Los Angeles, CA does not pose any hazard to aircraft operating out of the busy hub.

That's a change from November, when the agency issued a "Notice of Presumed Hazard" concerning the proposed stadium, saying it would need to be covered in a non-reflective surface to prevent interference with radar or a major design change.

That's all gone away, according to The Daily Breeze newspaper, and the original plan can proceed.

The change comes as the NFL owners voted to approve a move by the St. Louis Rams back to LA to play in the new stadium, and the San Diego Chargers until March to decide if they, too, wish to make a move north.

Metropolitan State University of Denver professor and aviation security expert Jeffrey Price told the paper that such scrutiny is common for projects that are planned in areas near airports, and the FAA normally is the party to make concessions. “Typically, the FAA will recommend using federal grant dollars to make modifications to the flight path or airport radar," he told The Daily Breeze.

The developers hope to have the stadium ready for use by 2019 ... and they admit they have a lot of work to do to make that happen.
