F/A-18 Lost at Sea

Sole Airman Recovered OK

An F/A-18 Hornet was lost shortly after takeoff from the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), on maneuvers in the western Pacific Ocean.

The naval aviator was on a routine training mission, and ejected some 45 miles from the ship. The officially unidentified pilot was recovered by helicopter, uninjured.

No explanation of just what went wrong has yet come from the Navy; we do not know if the Hornet were armed, or what it might have been carrying; or if it is recoverable.

This particular FA-18 Hornet was assigned to Fighter Attack Squadron 147, based at California's Naval Air Station Lemoore. The Carl Vinson is reportedly stationed in the area near North Korea, to remind that country not to do anything stupid.
