Iconic B-29 Bomber Completes Tour-Halting Engine Repairs

FIFI Set to Return to the Skies for the Mansfield, Ohio Show in July

The Commemorative Air Force’s iconic B-29 Superfortress is getting ready to fly after spending more than a month grounded for intensive engine repairs. The bomber, FIFI, is set to return to the skies in time for the July 9-13 show in Mansfield, Ohio.

The Superfortress had been undergoing typical preseason checks when issues were spotted with engines two and four (for plane nerds, the problem was with the impeller spinner discharge valves in the superchargers). These were identified as necessary repairs, leaving Squadron leadership with the tough decision to delay the aircraft’s first tour stop.

"We understand how disappointing this news is for our volunteers, supporters, and aviation fans," commented Jeremy Lashbrook, B-29/B-24 Squadron Leader. "But our guiding principle remains clear: If the job is done right, it is safe. We owe it to the brave veterans who flew these aircraft — and to future generations — to ensure FIFI continues to fly with the highest standards of safety and care."

Hood and the team removed the two damaged engines and shipped them off to Vintage Radials in Tehachapi, California, where radial engine expert Mike Nixon and his team tackled repairs and test runs. Engines two and four were then escorted back to Dallas, arriving safe and sound on June 16. They have since been reinstalled and fitted with their matching propellers for run-up testing.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team,” said Hood. “They treat FIFI with reverence. Every inspection, every bolt turned, is done with deep respect for what this aircraft represents—not just to the CAF, but to history.”

While the CAF initially hoped to get FIFI flying in time for the Lexington, Kentucky, tour stop on June 25, the organization is not quite finished with its prep work. Once all post-maintenance checks and aircrew flight training sessions are complete, FIFI will join the tour. Her return to flight is currently scheduled for July 9-13 at Ohio’s Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport (MFD).

In the meantime, the CAF is seeking some extra financial assistance to help it through the mud.

"Now more than ever, we need everyone to come together — whether it's volunteering your time, pitching in at tour stops, or making a donation. It truly takes a village to keep history alive,” commented Jeremy Lashbrook, B-29/B-24 Squadron Leader.
