Elon Musk Unveils Starship Mk1 Prototype

Revealed On 11th Anniversary For Falcon 1 Launch

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has unveiled the prototype of its Starship spacecraft that he hopes will be carrying people into space next year and eventually carry colonists to Mars.

The spacecraft was unveiled at a celebration marking the 11th anniversary of the first launch of the Falcon 1, which happened September 28th, 2008. According to a report from Space.com, the Starship is designed to carry up to 100 people to destinations such as the moon or Mars, and will carry Japanese billionaire entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa and a handful of artists on a trip around the moon in the 2020s, if all goes according to plan.

Starship will be powered by six Raptor engines, with up to 37 Raptors powering the booster which will lift it into orbit.

USA Today reports that SpaceX plans to launch the rocket on a test flight to about 65,000 feet before the end of the year, and hopes to be carrying passengers shortly thereafter.

"Starship will allow us to inhabit other worlds," Musk wrote on Twitter Friday. "To make life as we know it interplanetary."
