Tuskegee Airman Marks 100th Birthday

Celebrates With A Flight In A GA Airplane

Retired Col. Charles McGee marked his 100th birthday on Saturday, and to celebrate, he went for an airplane ride.

Television station WTTG reports that the flight actually took place on Friday. MeGee joked before the flight that he hoped the pilot would even let him take control of the airplane for a few minutes "just to get the feel."

McGee joined the Tuskegee Airmen at the age of 22. He eventually commanded a squadron and flew 409 combat missions during WWII, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars.

McGee lives in Bethesda, MD. His home is filled with awards, including a Congressional Gold Medal presented by President George W. Bush. He has been recommended for an honorary promotion to brigadier general, which has been passed by the U.S. Senate and is waiting for action in the U.S. House of Representatives.

McGee is the oldest of the nine remaining Tuskegee Airmen.
