SpaceX Dragon, Booster Catch 'Selfies' During Launch

Images Captured During June 3 Launch To ISS

Some unusual photographs were captured during the June 3 launch of a Dragon cargo vessel to ISS.

SpaceX released the images via Twitter a few days ago. The Dragon was captured in an image taken by the upper stage of the Falcon 9 booster that carried the spacecraft into orbit, according to a report from Space.com.

"Dragon photobombs stage 2 before heading to @Space_Station earlier this month," SpaceX representatives wrote on the social media service. Then "Stage 2 returns the favor," the company tweeted, showing the second stage 2 rocket backlit against the Earth. One of the Dragon's solar arrays is visible in the photo.

It was the first time that the company flew a space-proven Dragon capsule to the ISS. Space.com reported at the time that Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of flight reusability at SpaceX, said before the launch that after the capsule splashed down in October, 2014 that it was refurbished and inspected to make sure everything was qualified for the next flight.

SpaceX is still working on how it might be able to recover the Falcon 9 second stage, to make the system totally reusable.
