Avidyne Releases AviOS v10.3 For SMS Suite

Avidyne OS Version 10.3 Now Available For FMS Suite

Avidyne recently announced the release of version 10.3 of its Avidyne Operating System for its suite of Flight Management Systems which includes the increasingly popular IFD400 and IFD500 series common to general aviation aircraft as well as the (not so common to GA) flavors of FMS such as ATLAS for turbine aircraft, and HELIOS for Corporate, Military and Special Mission Helicopters.

Having received Technical Standard Order (TSO) approval and Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval FAA, and successfully vaulted the post-pandemic hurdles, Avidyne reckons they’re ready to meet the demand for immediate shipment on new units, as well as upgrades for the large installed base of existing Avidyne customers. The author has recent experience with a GNS430 to IFD440 upgrade and will report later once the update is done from AviOS 10.2.61 to version 10.3. The iPad remote display unit will also need to be pushed to the IFD100 v10.3 so that both are on the same software version. Those who have been comfortably using the Avidyne FMS for some time should find the transition relatively painless.

Circa 2017, Avidyne released a stable (in the authors opinion) AviOS 10.2! That’s a long time in software world, and they could have adopted the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and leave things exactly as they were (much like Garmin has done with its GNS400/500 series of GPS), however, in the author’s opinion, it appears that Avidyne is making every effort to both secure and grow its user-base, particularly with the its popular GNS to IFD trade-in program!

The new AviOS10.3 promises a rich feature upgrade with too many to mention, but here are a few highlights: GI275 interface, powerline depiction, Radar Altimeter Display (via ARINC429), support for additional ADS-B weather products, CSV import of user waypoints, improved configuration support for 3rd-party WiFi-connected devices (Stratus, Foreflight, and others), improved pilot setup/configuration pages and more.
