Kiowa Down In Baquba

Intense Air And Ground Campaign In Iraq

An Army Kiowa crashed near the central Iraqi town of Baquba Wednesday, apparently brought down by small arms fire in the midst of a growing insurgency that's broken out across the Gulf nation.

Initial reports from American military officials in Baghdad indicated no one aboard the OH-58 was injured in the shoot-down. A news photographer in Baquba said he saw the helicopter burning in a field before the area was sealed off by American soldiers. Later, the wreckage was trucked to a nearby military base.

In the meantime, an American military helicopter -- type unknown -- fired three missiles at a mosque in the war-torn town of Fallujah Wednesday. Witnesses said 40 people were killed in the attack. There was no immediate confirmation from the US military in Iraq.

Fallujah and the surrounding area have been the focal point for violence led by Sunni Muslims. Twelve American Marines were killed in Ramadi early Wednesday when they were ambushed by Iraqi insurgents.
