A Better Picture Of Venezuelan Tragedy

Peering Through The Fog Of Fast-Moving Events In Far Away Places

We're getting a clearer picture of just what happened in Venezuela over the weekend, where 25 people were lost in the crash of a military transport aircraft.

The Short C-23 Sherpa (file photo of type, below) was returning to La Orchila from the Caribbean coast, according to the BBC, when it went down in mountains west of Caracas Saturday.

A spokesman for the Venezuelan Air Force told the BBC that the victims included soldiers' family members and at least five children.

"We're assuming the accident happened in bad weather," a Venezuelan civil aviation spokesman told Reuters.

President Hugo Chavez, himself a former paratrooper, expressed his sorrow at the tragedy during his regular weekly radio and television broadcasts.
