Airline Lobbying Sees Major Surge

Passenger Rights, ATC Privatization Spurred The Increase

Airlines for America lobbying surged more than 30 percent in 2017 compared to 2016, according to a recently filed disclosure form.

The Hill reports that A4A spent $8.59 million lobbying in 2017, a 34 percent increase over the $6.43 million spent in 2016. $2.18 of that was spent in the final three months of the year.

The form shows that "air traffic control reform" was the primary focus of the association's fourth-quarter efforts. But despite the efforts of some in Congress and an endorsement from President Trump, the spinoff of ATC never made it to the House Floor for a vote.

Over the summer, A4A boosted its lobbying efforts after a passenger was dragged off a United Airlines flight. The associated video of the incident created a public relations nightmare for UA, and lawmakers threatened legislative action if corrective measures were not put in place after the incident.
