Contractor Selected For Control Tower At Charlotte Douglas Intl. Airport

Archer Western Selected For The Project Set To Begin This Spring

The FAA has selected Archer Western Construction to build a new Air Traffic Control Tower at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Archer Western will build the 370-foot tall structural precast concrete tower along with a 42,000 square-foot Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) base building. Construction will begin in spring 2016.

The new $60 million control tower will replace the existing tower that has been in operation since 1979. It will accommodate air traffic controllers in an 850 square-foot tower cab. The new tower will allow air traffic controllers to effectively manage the growing aircraft operations at the nation’s sixth busiest airport. The tower controlled approximately 544,000 aircraft operations in 2015, and is forecasted to grow to 748,000 by 2040.

“Charlotte Douglas has become a major transportation center in America,” said Kevin Swain, Vice President of Archer Western, “We are pleased to expand our work at the airport, and look forward to partnering with the FAA to further enhance its operations.”

The TRACON base building is a one-story facility that will contain administrative offices, storage and a power distribution supply system. Construction of the tower and TRACON base building is expected to be complete in 2018, and fully operational in 2019.
