FAA Reauthorization Bill One Step Closer To Reality

Controversy Lingers Over Privatization

The House has passed a $60 billion dollar aviation bill, over strong objections from Democrats. Democrats wanted to keep a proposed ban on the expansion of air traffic privatization in the Federal Aviation Administration's programming bill. 

Over the summer, both houses approved proposals to stop additional privatization of air traffic control centers.

The proposal was first modified and then stripped from the bill, under pressure from the White House. Democrats say they weren't consulted on the change and used various procedural moves to stall the vote.
 
The bill may not pass the Senate where Democrats hold more power. The FAA and the White House would like to see the air traffic control centers in the hands of private industry.

Democrats and NATCA say that would fragment the entire system and threaten safety.
