Pair Flying Ditched Cirrus Were On A Medical Mission To Haiti

Doctor Says He Will Definitely Have Another Airplane

The doctor and his daughter who ditched their Cirrus off the coast of Andros Island in the Bahamas Saturday are continuing their medical mission to Haiti ... albeit on a commercial flight.

The trip was interrupted when the SR22 they were flying developed engine problems, which eventually resulted in a complete loss of power. The pilot elected to deploy the airframe parachute, and alerted the Coast Guard as to their location. They were rescued shortly after the airplane came to rest in the water.

Now, ABC News reports that Dr. Richard McGlaughlin and his daughter Elaine have continued on to Haiti, departing from Nassau, Bahamas at 0830 local time Monday morning ... this time on a commercial flight. Dr. McGlaughlin's interest in Haiti began two years ago following the devastating earthquake.

As to flying across the ocean in a single-engine plane? McGlaughlin said he'll be doing that again "as soon as I get another airplane." (Image provided by the USCG)
