GoPro To Relaunch Karma Drone Later This Year

Company Says Power Loss Was A Mechanical Issue

GoPro announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Wednesday that it will re-launch the embattled Karma drone later this year.

GoPro said in a news conference at the show and in a press statement that the power loss that occurred in a small number of its drones was due to a mechanical issue related to securing the drone's battery. GoPro is completing its testing, and in early February, will provide more detail for the global relaunch of Karma in 2017.

The Wall Street Journal reports that GoPro hopes the relaunch of the Karma will help revitalize the company after a challenging year that saw production delays, lowered sales expectation, and the eventual recall of the drone.

The news was part of a broader announcement by the company of software updates for its Hero5 Black camera that will allow users to automatically upload any new photos and videos to your GoPro cloud account. From there, the Quik mobile app makes it simple to create stunning edits on a smartphone and the Quik desktop app provides expanded editing options for power users.

The Hero5 Black also will feature GPS and additional sensors that capture your location, elevation, speed, and G-force loads.
