Airborne 12.20.21: MyGoFlight CEO Lost, Mars Heli, Wingsuit v Volcano

Also: Planes Grounded from Pilot Shortage, ICAS 2021, Last of the A380s, Patty Wagstaff

A Cirrus SR22 is reported to have gone down in Knoxville, TN, with two on board.

One person was identified by his company, as Charlie Schneider, CEO of MyGoFlight. The accident took place in the morning, about 0920 local time, December 16th near the McGhee Tyson Airport. The MyGoFlight Facebook page has reported that, "Charlie was traveling for business on a single-engine craft, Cirrus SR22. At this time, the cause of the accident is unknown. Charlie died this morning at UT Medical Center in Nashville, TN. During this time of loss, the family is asking for privacy. Please keep his family in your prayers," said the company. The impressively long-lived Ingenuity, the aircraft sent under the Mars Helicopter project, has seen yet another milestone, passing the 30-minute mark for lifetime flight. The most recent 117-second sortie saw the little helo fly closer to its initial deployment point at "Wright Brothers Field" in order to meet NASA's Perseverance Mars rover after it finishes its tour of the South Séítah region of the Jezero Martian crater. Ingenuity is the first powered aircraft to fly another planet, achieving far and beyond its original design intent. Red Bull wingsuit pilot Sebastían Álvarez, former Chilean Air Force pilot and death-defier, has become the first man to fly in a wingsuit through an active volcano. He jumped from an orbiting helicopter 2.2 miles above ground level to build sufficient speed, heading towards the 650' crater at 180mph. A first for unpowered human flight, he descended below the rim, entering the crater for several seconds before pivoting skyward once again. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
