San Francisco Aeronautical Society Announces First Scholarship Winners

Open To High School Seniors Attending Public Schools

The San Francisco Aeronautical Society has revealed the names of the inaugural winners of the SFAS Scholars Program, in recognition of the historical contributions made by the many legends of aviation.

Scholarships are open to high school seniors attending a public high school in one of the following school districts: San Francisco Unified School District, San Mateo Union High School District, Jefferson Union High School District and Sequoia Union High School District. Applicants must be anticipating completion of a high school diploma at the time of application, planning to pursue a degree at an accredited post secondary institution and carrying a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. at the end of their junior year of high school.

Listed are the five recipients, the high school they attended, the aviation pioneer about whom they wrote their essay, as well as which college they will be attending and their chosen field of study.

  • Tommy Ng of Westmoor High School wrote about Chuck Yeager and will be attending UCLA studying medicine/molecular biology.
  • Hirdeep Chahal of Menlo-Atherton High School wrote about Charles Lindbergh and will be attending San Jose State University studying nursing.
  • Marie Shadowens of Capuchino High School wrote about Igor Sikorsky and will be attending UC Davis studying civil engineering.
  • Kira Ghandhi of Carlmont High School wrote about Igor Sikorsky and will be attending the University of Chicago, to study mathematics.
  • Jessica Syracuse of Burlingame High School wrote about Charles Lindbergh and will be attending Menlo College studying business.

The San Francisco Aeronautical Society was founded in 1997 as a nonprofit organization to serve as the affiliated support group of the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum. This facility located at San Francisco International Airport opened to the public in December 2000. As a collecting institution for research and exhibition programming, its purpose is to enrich our understanding of past, present, and future achievements in air transport.
