Former Race Pilot Fatally Injured In Reno-Stead Airport Accident

Plane Overturned After Landing Tuesday Evening

A veteran race pilot was fatally injured Tuesday evening when the plane he was flying flipped over after landing at Reno-Stead airport.

The pilot was 80-year-old John Gano Parker, according to a report from television station KRNV. His exact cause of death has not yet been determined. The accident involving the Thunder Mustang was confirmed by FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor, who said Parker was the only person on board the aircraft.

Parker participated in the Reno Air Races for more than 40 years. He competed in the Unlimited, Formula One and Sport Class. Over the years, he won three gold medals in Formula One and also took one gold in Sport Class.

His aviation career spanned decades, having flown for the Air Force and American Airlines before starting American Air Racing in 1967.

Reno-Stead spokesman Brian Kulpin said that Parker was well known at the airport.
