Cirrus SR22 Down In Palatka, FL

Parachute Deployment Credited With Saving Pilot

A Cirrus SR22 went down Tuesday in a residential area near Palatka, FL after the pilot experienced engine problems and deployed the aircraft's emergency parachute.

The plane came down in the backyard of a home, narrowly missing the structure.

Television station WJXT reports that the pilot was taken to the hospital for observation. Putnam County Fire Chief Mike Patterson said they were investigating a report that a second person was on the aircraft.

The parachute became entangled in power lines, and Florida Power and Light cut power to the area to remove the parachute.

The FAA registry shows that the airplane is registered to David R. Thomas in Apex, North Carolina. The airplane was manufactured in 2002, and received its last airworthiness certificate in August 2010.
