First Pipistrel Velis Electro Delivered At Santa Monica

First FAA-Exempt Electric LSA To Be Used For Flight Training

Pipistrel announced that the Eco-Aviation Foundation International has taken delivery of the first Velis Electro and it will be used for flight training under an FAA airworthiness exemption.

Eco-Aviation Foundation is a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting clean and quiet aviation worldwide and anticipates receiving its second Velis Electro in November 2024.

The Pipistrel Velis Electro is an all-electric light sport aircraft (LSA) and will be the first of its kind at Santa Monica Airport (KSMO) in California. Produced by Pipistrel in Ajdovš?ina, Slovenia, its noise signature is just 60 decibels, and is a low-cost, user-friendly and zero-carbon-emissions aircraft ideal for flight training.

In addition to facilitating the purchase of the Velis Electro, the Eco-Aviation Foundation is establishing an Eco Flight Ground School accompanied by a scholarship program in collaboration with local youth-focused community centers. The scholarships will fully fund Private Pilot ground school courses that include the complete FAA-approved curriculum as well as training on electric aircraft technologies. Recipients will also have the fee for the FAA knowledge exam covered.

Eco-Aviation Foundation is also focused on providing flight training and promoting aviation career opportunities for young adults in underserved communities.

Scott Burgess, President of Eco-Aviation Foundation International commented, “This aircraft is not just a symbol of innovation and the future of clean aviation, but a functional tool to empower the next generation of aviation professionals. While we’re proud to launch these efforts in Santa Monica, we anticipate that flight schools everywhere will embrace this opportunity to engage in similar efforts. The Foundation plans to help facilitate many of these initiatives.”
