AEA: Good News For The Avionics Economy

AEA Reports 5.8% Increase In Avionics, Hardware Sales Over 2020

The Aircraft Electronics Association has released Avionics Market Report, a direct analysis on the state of the hardware, refurbishment, and avionic market. Overall, worldwide business and general aviation sales represented a 5.4% increase in total sales compared to the same time period in 2020, a 1.8% increase in sales sequentially from the second quarter of 2021.

For the 5th consecutive quarter, sales worldwide have increased, illustrating the level of economic recovery as the industry struggles back up to its pre-virus standard.

Holding true to the increased interest in business aviation, the majority of installations-counting all business and GA electronic sales, to include components and accessories in cockpit, cabin, software upgrades, portables, certified, batteries, chargeable product upgrades, and in-aircraft hardware. While a wide umbrella to include equipment under, the market amounted to $1.7 billion in sales this year, with 53.7% coming from the retrofit market, and factory installations accounting for the remaining 46.3%. North America once again took the lion’s share of the business, with 74.8% of the total sales volume taking place in the United States and Canada.

It should be noted, however, that the companies surveyed were not representative of the entire world avionics market by any stringent standard. The AEA describes their data collection along with the report, and the list of companies cooperating with the information collection and reporting skews to the bigger names in American aviation. Appareo, ALTO Aviation, BendixKing, Collins Aerospace, Garmin, Honeywell, L3Harris, And Universal Avionics are all familiar names in the avionics and flight hardware industry, but far from the only players in the industry. Smaller LSA and experimental specialist Dynon is notably missing from the list, for example, but their increasing presence in dashboards at every trade show would indicate gaining market share. For more information, the AEA site is available for perusal.
