Mid-Air Collision Claims Two At Marana Regional

Lancair 360 MKII And Cessna 172 Collide In Pattern

Two people sustained fatal injuries in a mid-air collision over Marana Regional Airport (AVQ) in Arizona, involving a Lancair 360 MK II and a Cessna 172. The two occupants in the Lancair perished but the two onboard the Cessna were able to land safely and survived without injuries.

The experimental Lancair kit built by Michal S. Reinath performing circuits in the traffic pattern at 2,100 feet while the Cessna was on final approach to runway 12 with the Lancair closing in on the Cessna. After landing, the Cessna appears to have initiated a takeoff with the Lancair going around, until both datapoints merge just southeast of runway 3/21.

The Lancair went down and was destroyed with both occupants fatally injured. The Cessna was able to continue and complete a traffic pattern before landing safely without further incident.

This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
