Ukrainian Pilot Charged With Murder In Russia

Accused Of Complicity In June 17 Fatal Injury Of Two Russian Journalists

Ukraine's first female military pilot has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of two Russian journalists during a mortar attack in Ukraine on June 17th.

First Lt. Nadiya Savchenko has been charged with complicity in the attack, which took place at a checkpoint outside Luhansk in eastern Ukraine manned by pro-Russian separatists. The following day, she was captured by the separatists and is now set to go on trial in Voronezh in souhtwestern Russia.

USA Today reports that the Russian Investigative Committee ... their version of the FBI ... says Savchenko helped the mortar crew target the journalists during the battle. The committee said that Savchenko obtained the coordinates of a civilian-occupied area and gave them to the Ukrainian mortar crew.

Savchenko admits to being part of the battle, saying she was fighting on the ground in the area, but says she did not target the journalists or other civilians.

The U.S. has condemned the charges, and Savchenko's transportation to Russia.
