FAA Continues War on Close Calls in the Terminal Environment

Series of Runway Safety Action Meetings Aim to Close Out 2023 Safer Than it Started

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced a series of safety meetings as it continues the campaign against runway incursions, with 16 locations announced through the end of 2023.

The meetings will, like the previous 90 conventions of the Runway Safety Action Team, attempt to get everyone involved in the airport ecosystem to hit the goal of "zero serious close calls". The meetings are generally held annually at airports with a large control tower and act as the "primary forum for pinpointing and addressing airport-specific risk in the surface environment." Once complete, each meeting will end up with a custom, localized Runway Safety Action Plan. So long as involved stakeholders agree to pursue each of their agreed upon goals and actions, airport safety should see verifiable improvements.

Each meeting includes representatives from the FAA’s air traffic organization, airlines, pilots, airport vehicle drivers and similarly applicable personnel. The collective Runway Safety Action Team can leverage the composite know-how of everyone present to identify their local airport's unique risks and challenges, as well as use their own intimate knowledge of resources and capabilities in the area to eliminate or minimize those same risks.

Next up on the docket will be meetings at "Allegheny County Airport (Pennsylvania), Bellingham International Airport (Washington); Boston Logan International Airport (Massachusetts), Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (North Carolina); Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (Texas), Des Moines International Airport (Iowa); El Paso Regional Airport (Texas), Flying Cloud Airport (Minnesota); Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey), New York Stewart International Airport (New York); Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (Virginia), San Marcos Regional Airport (Texas); St. Louis Regional Airport (Illinois), Waterloo Regional Airport (Iowa); Waukegan National Airport (Illinois), and Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport (Ohio).
