Record-Setting Australian Pilot Injured In Fatal Biplane Crash

Ryan Campbell, Who Circled The World As A Teenager In 2013, Seriously Injured In An Airplane Accident

In 2013, 19-year-old Australian, Ryan Campbell, took 70 days to circle the globe in a specially modified GA aircraft. His story is told in the book, Born to Fly, and he now faces a challenge much greater that his solo flight around the world.

In a report obtained from the Australian.com, we learn that Campbell was flying a vintage deHavilland Tiger Moth with a passenger when something went wrong and the airplane crashed into an open field. The accident occurred near Norwell Australia, with Campbell suffering critical injuries while his passenger was fatally injured.

According to the report, the plane was in trouble shortly after takeoff and crashed near the airport of departure. The aircraft was being operated by Tiger Moth Joyrides, a company that provides sightseeing flights in vintage aircraft.

The report states that this company had a previous accident that also resulted in a fatality. The Australian Transportation Safety Bureau reportedly found maintenance issues with the accident airplane and the company was eventually sold, and began operating again earlier this year. The report did not determine whether this was a paid flight being provided by the company or if it was a personal flight.
