Joby Prepares to Double US Manufacturing in 2027

Air Taxi Manufacturer Plans to Churn Out Four Aircraft Per Month With Certification Underway

Joby Aviation is laying out plans to double its US manufacturing capacity, targeting a new production rate of four electric air taxis per month in 2027. The boost is being aided by growing operations at Joby’s California and Ohio facilities, where the company already hosts flight testing, final assembly, and component manufacturing.

The announcement comes as Joby continues the long haul toward FAA type certification of its eVTOL. The company is steadily progressing through power-on testing of the first FAA-conforming aircraft intended for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA), which is the final phase of the certification process for FAA test pilots to evaluate the aircraft. Joby reports that the remaining FAA-conforming aircraft required for TIA are currently in production.

Manufacturing expansion is centered on two sites. In California, Joby has completed an expansion of its Marina facility and is bringing in additional capital equipment as well as hiring staff to support round-the-clock operations. In Ohio, the company has already begun propeller blade production and has hinted at further manufacturing growth in the state as output ramps up.

“We are entering the next golden age of aviation,” said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby. “From factories in California and Ohio, we plan to redefine how people travel across the world, as Joby becomes one of a small number of companies in the world with the industrial capability to build aircraft at this pace and quality.”

Joby’s production plans are closely tied to its partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation. In May 2025, Joby closed the first $250 million tranche of a strategic investment from Toyota. This is just one part of a broader collaboration focused on manufacturing expertise and scalability.

While four aircraft per month is modest compared to the greater world of aerospace, it would place Joby among a very small group of manufacturers attempting serial production of piloted eVTOL aircraft under FAA certification. The strategic approach is a careful balance of certification progress, supplier readiness, and manufacturing discipline.

“Given the maturity of our air taxi program and the significant demand we’re seeing for our aircraft, we’re confident now is the right time to invest in the equipment, facilities and people required to accelerate production, and we look forward to doing so with Toyota, the world’s largest auto manufacturer, at our side,” Bevirt added.
