House Aviation Subcommittee To Hold Roundtable Meeting On Safety Issues

Part Of Process For FAA Reauthorization

The Subcommittee on Aviation, chaired by U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) (pictured), will conduct a roundtable policy discussion Thursday on aviation safety issues as the Subcommittee and the full Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure continue to work toward a bill to reauthorize the FAA.

One of the Committee’s highest priorities this year is an FAA reauthorization that helps ensure modernization of the air traffic control system and lays the groundwork for the future of the U.S. aviation system.  Recent authorizations of FAA programs have included a number of provisions addressing aviation safety, such as provisions regarding aviation worker training, foreign repair station oversight, FAA facility staffing, expeditious certification of new safety-enhancing technologies, and issues raised following the 2009 Continental Flight 3407 accident near Buffalo, New York.  The FAA has implemented many of these safety provisions, but has yet to complete work on others.  This Subcommittee roundtable, entitled “Ensuring the Safety of Our Nation’s Aviation System” will examine the status of recent safety provisions.

In addition to Members of the Aviation Subcommittee, participants will include:

  • The Honorable Christopher Hart, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
  • Matthew Hampton, Assistant Inspector General for Aviation Audits, Office of Inspector General, Department of Transportation
  • Faye Malarkey Black, Interim President, Regional Airline Association
  • Mark Baker, President and CEO, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association
  • Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger, III, on behalf of the Families of Continental Flight 3407

The roundtable is open to the public and scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2015 in Room 2167 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
