But It's a Good Thing: Hartzell's DOA

Delegated Option Authorization Expanded to 1800 hp

The FAA recently expanded Hartzell Propeller's authority under its DOA designation. The bottom line is that Hartzell can now approve its own design data for purposes of type, production, and airworthiness certifications for its props. In a move that's sure to please Sean D Tucker and assorted RV and Lancair builders, that authorization was also raised from 1500 shp to 1800 shp.

Ronald T. Wojnar, Acting Director of the FAA's Aircraft Certification Service wrote, "...The FAA acknowledges Hartzell's demonstrated competence as a propeller designer and manufacturer...[and] has determined, accordingly, that Hartzell should be permitted to expand the limits of its DOA."

The DOA does not change any requirements for certification; rather, it allows Hartzell more flexibility in scheduling approvals. Shorter time-to-market and lower costs are expected to result.
