CAF Antonov An-2 Down In SoCal

Pilot And Passenger Both Survive Accident

The Antonov An-2 biplane belonging to the Commemorative Air Force went down Friday near San Bernardino International Airport on Friday, landing upside down in a field near a residential neighborhood.

But perhaps as a testament to how the airplane was built, both the pilot and a passenger survived the accident.

The Los Angeles Times reports that, according to the FAA, the plane lost power about two miles from the airport and went through some power lines before impacting terrain.

According to the CAF website, the An-2 is a Soviet mass-produced single-engine biplane utility/agricultural aircraft designed and manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau since 1946. Often this aircraft will be referred to as a “Colt”.

The CAF's An-2 in was built in 1984.

The An-2 is assigned to the 3rd Pursuit Squadron based in Upland CA. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
