Weather Delays Record-Setting Free-Fall Attempt

Felix Baumgartner Now Plans To Attempt The Jump Tuesday

Anyone in aviation knows that you simply can't control the weather, and so it was for the record-setting free-fall attempt known as the Red Bull Stratos Project. The jump was planned for Monday morning, but Mother Nature apparently had other ideas.

The Stratos blog indicates that the weather Monday was simply not acceptable, after a strong cold front moved through the Roswell, NM, region over the weekend. The gusty winds and colder temperatures forced a 24-hour delay in Baumgartner's attempt to free-fall from about 18 miles in altitude, and break the sound barrier during his free-fall.

The balloon that will carry the capsule with Baumgartner inside requires a wind speed of under 2 miles per hour to safely launch.

In a news release, the team said that it believes Tuesday may offer optimum conditions. When the final jump takes place, Baumgartner will launch the largest manned balloon in history measuring 610 feet high with a volume of over 1.1 million cubic yards.

The Austrian BASE jumper's family said on the blog that they were 100 percent behind him in his attempt. "It's his biggest dream come true," said his mother Eva.
