Remembering Doug Rogerson

Canadian Pilot Lost During Oshawa Air Show

A SeaRey homebuilt aircraft -- just like the one Doug Rogerson was flying over the weekend -- stood decorated with yellow ribbons Sunday in Oshawa, Ontario, a reminder of the pilot and the accident that took his life.

Rogerson, an Air Canada pilot, died over the weekend in the first-ever fatal accident in the Canadian Aviation Expo's 13-year history, according to Canadian TV.

John Dunlop, who, like Rogerson, was preparing for a SeaRey (file photo of type, above) fly-by, didn't see the accident, as Rogerson piled into a gravel pit not far from the airport Saturday afternoon. Another pilot just behind Dunlop and Rogerson said he apparently banked right, then corkscrewed into the ground.

CTV reports the SeaRey is popular Up North, with a pretty good safety record -- even in the face of a complete engine failure.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
