FAA: Drone ID Rules Should Come This Year

Acting Deputy Administrator Makes Announcement At Singapore Airshow

The FAA should have rules to identify drones and their pilots this year, according to FAA Acting Deputy Administrator Carl Burleson.

During a panel discussion at the Singapore Air Show last week, Burleson said that drone security is one of the agency's top priorities for this year.

CNBC reports that during the discussion, Burleson said that safety is a primary concern, but not the only one. "here we have a whole set of concerns and interest by the law enforcement community, by the national security community," he told the audience.

"One of the first things we're looking at, and hopefully get done this year, is some kind of rule-making on ID. From the law enforcement standpoint, at least in our country, that's pretty fundamental. People want to be able to track something — if something goes wrong, they can go back and try to figure out who is responsible."

The acting administrator said the agency has a threefold strategy to deal with drones: integration of the aircraft into the NAS; making decisions about what risks may be presented by individual drones, and; collecting and studying data that would assist the FAA in assessing those risks.
