Anderson, SC Airshow Set For October 22

Organizers Reach Fundraising Goal Of $30,000

The Anderson (SC) Regional Airshow has reached its fundraising goal of $30,000, fully funding the community event set for October 22.

The Independent Mail newspaper reports that the show's organizers set the goal based on the performers it wanted to attract to the event. Butch Jones, the chair of the organizing committee, said that substantial gifts from individual donors might mean they can invite some additional acts.

The show, which is free to the public, drew about 20,000 in May of 2015, and that was in the middle of the week. This year's show will be held on a Saturday. The show will be a Salute to Vietnam Veterans, and will feature several military aircraft. Several civilian aerobatic performers, and the "Shockwave" jet-powered truck are also on the program.

Among the static displays will be the "Take Me Home Huey", a sculpture dedicated to the 2,709,918 Americans who served in Vietnam but never received a welcome home. This sculpture, which promotes healing and awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress, is made from a boneyard Huey helicopter, serial #67-17174, which was shot down with two casualties during a 1969 Medevac mission in Vietnam. The sculpture is the result of a partnership between artist Steve Maloney and Light Horse Legacy. You can see a photo of the sculpture by following the FMI link below.
