Study: Backscatter Devices Do Not Jeopardize Health

University Of California Research Says Full-Body Scanners Pose No Health Risk

A study published in the University of California's "Archives Of Internal Medicine" indicates that the full-body scanners in use in airports around the world pose no significant health risk due to radiation.

The study found that a person would have to pass through a scanner 50 times to be exposed to the same amount of radiation as a dental X-ray. A lung X-ray would expose a person to the same amount of radiation as 1,000 trips through the scanner, the report said.

The French News Service AFP reports that the study shows that the radiation dose from being scanned with one of the backscatter devices is equivalent to about 3 to 9 minutes of ordinary daily living, and that there is far more radiation exposure while flying due to the decreased natural protection from cosmic rays at altitude.

The devices are in use in 78 airports around the country.
