New Jersey Assembly Passes Record-Keeping Bill

AOPA Continues The Fight In Senate

A state bureaucracy's myopic intrusion into aviator's rights continues. The 80 member New Jersey General Assembly unanimously passed Assembly Bill 3058 on Thursday, which would require aircraft providers to verify a renter's pilot certificate and government-issued photo identification (thereby exposing each pilot to possible identity theft risks) and to retain copies of that information for five years. An identical Senate bill (S1738) already has passed a committee unanimously and is poised to pass the 40 member State Senate.

"AOPA will continue to fight the bill and the needless record-keeping requirements that it would impose on aircraft providers," said Roger Cohen, AOPA vice president of regional affairs.

AOPA has explained to New Jersey lawmakers that the aircraft rental process includes requirements to verify a pilot's identification, flight experience, and knowledge of the aircraft to be rented. Aircraft providers already keep copies of the necessary documents on file.
