GAMA Commends FAA on SMS Rule

GAMA Pleased With New FAA SMS Rule

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association has applauded the FAA's final rule on Safety Management Systems (SMS), announced by GAMA President Pete Bunce.

The new rule, supported by years of advocacy from GAMA, aims to enhance aviation safety by institutionalizing SMS in the industry. SMS encourages a systematic approach to managing safety risks and promoting a strong safety culture across all levels of aviation operations. This includes improved communication and the effective resolution of safety issues. The rule has garnered significant backing, including support from the U.S. Congress and collaboration from the FAA's Aircraft Certification Service.

The new Safety Management System requirement will take effect at the end of May, 2024. It will affect a wide array of aviation sectors, including manufacturing, air taxi operators, and charter airlines. Scheduled air carriers operating under 14 CFR 121 have been required to implement SMS into their operations for many years.

GAMA is an international trade association representing over 150 of the world's leading manufacturers of general aviation airplanes and rotorcraft, engines, avionics, components and related services. GAMA's members also operate repair stations, fixed based operations, pilot and maintenance training facilities and manage fleets of aircraft.
