Takes Key AOPA Member Concerns To Congressional Leaders

AOPA President Phil Boyer has been pressing the concerns of pilots on user fees, airport security, and airports with key members of Congress during a series of meetings over the past week. Legislators are working on the federal budget for fiscal year 2005 and the associated policies.

In conjunction with the London AirFest International Airshow this year, Diamond Aircraft is inviting all owners of Diamond airplanes to the factory for seminars, training, updates and tours. The event is co-organized with the Diamond Aircraft Pilots and Owners Organization (DAPO). The dates for DiamondFest 2004 are June 24 through 26th, 2004.

It's no secret that the TSA is keeping a list and checking it twice, hoping to find who's naughty or nice. And as far as the American Civil Liberties Union is concerned, therein lies the rub. The ACLU Tuesday sued the TSA on behalf of seven airline passengers the civil liberties group says have been wrongly placed on the so-called "do not fly" list.

Two days of "grueling" mediation has produced an agreement between the family of a pilot and the families of Oklahoma State University basketball players and others killed in a 2001 crash: They won't sue each other. They'll instead sue Raytheon, the maker of the King Air 200 that went down.

So, let's get this straight: If you're bad, you get a lump of coal in your stocking. If you're good, you get a load of coal in your fuel tanks, right? Right. Researchers at Penn State have come up with a bituminous coal-based concoction they say will run a jet engine. But it has to be a specially-built jet engine. And the fuel itself has some pretty special properties.

A Piper Comanche made an unscheduled exit in Overland Park (KS) early Tuesday morning, much to the surprise of those who were supposed to be on the road. The 1959 Comanche, N-5844P, apparently lost power at around 12:15 am (CDT). Local media reports say the pilot, from Olathe (KS) and the passenger were on a trip from Ohio to New Century Air Center near Gardner (KS).

The next US aircraft carrier and all that follow will have a completely new catapult design for launching aircraft. Monday, the Navy awarded a $145.6 million contract for that new system to General Atomics of San Diego (CA).

Mills was the PIC aboard a King Air 200 that went down in Colorado January 27, 2001, killing two members of the Oklahoma State University basketball team and eight other people. Family members, including Wilson, decided over the weekend to put aside their differences and sue Raytheon, maker of the King Air, because of mechanical problems that they say were to blame for the crash. The NTSB ruled that Mills erred in trying to recover from a complete loss of AC power on the aircraft

The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) takes pride in announcing a significant aviation accomplishment on the part of these very special aviation educators.  Recently, they were all designated Master Instructors by NAFI, their professional aviation organization.

A New Jersey couple was hospitalized in Elko (NV) Tuesday morning after their Beechcraft B-36 made an emergency landing in a field shortly after take-off from Elko Regional Airport. Authorities said the couple had just departed Elko's Runway 5 and apparently ran into power problems right away.

At age 19, Nick Donner has already been the US National Hot Air Balloon Champion twice -- in 2001 and in 2003 -- and is captain of the American team that will compete at the World Hot Air Balloon Championship in Australia this June. The young balloonist is also a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world's premier university specializing in aviation and aerospace. "I've always wanted to be a pilot," Donner says, "so what better place to get my degree than Embry-Riddle?"

The US Air Force has authorized Rockwell Collins to begin the $36.9M Lot II, the first phase of full rate production, as part of the C/KC-135 Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) program.  This first production phase calls for the building, delivery and installation of 30 additional R-model aircraft ship sets with deliveries beginning in April 2005.  If fully executed, the GATM program could generate $600 million in revenue for Rockwell Collins.

This action is necessary to prevent an inability to lower or retract the landing gear using the landing gear control handle, which could result in use of Emergency Procedures using the landing gear manual release. This action is intended to address the identified unsafe condition.
