Turk Tries To Hijack Plane To Iran

Detained By Police, No Injuries Reported

A man claiming to have an explosive device onboard a charter flight from Diyarbakir, Turkey to Istanbul was detained by police shortly after the plane touched down in Ankara, according to media reports.

CNN-Turk television reports the man, identified as Mehmet Goksen Gol, stormed the cockpit of the Pegasus airline flight, and demanded the plane be diverted to Ankara. The crew complied... but the would-be hijacker then allegedly changed his mind, and told the crew to set course for Iran.

When police captured him at Ankara's Esenboga Airport, Gol was found to have a cell phone disguised as a bomb... but he carried no actual explosives, nor firearms.

Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said the man didn't make any political demands. The reason Gol wanted the flight diverted is under investigation.

One witnesses said Gol had been reading from the Koran during the flight. None of the 178 passengers and crew onboard the Boeing 737-800 was injured in the incident.
