Designed For Entry-Level Racers

A drone racing training kit targeted at those looking to get into the sport has been introduced by Fat Shark, the makers of FPV headsets for drone racing. The entry-level kit, called 101, consists of a custom-designed quadcopter, race-ready recon goggles and a professional-grade radio controller.

Also included in the $249 introductory price is access to the Drone Racing League's simulator, and three months of membership to the Academy of Model Aeronautics plus insurance.

The included controller plugs directly into a computer for integration with the DRL simulator, and can be used to fly the quadcopter in both stabilized and advanced modes, according to the company.

Recharging of both the aircraft and the goggles is done via USB. The drone is designed to be simple. Binding is automatic, so all the user has to do is open the box, charge the batteries, and its ready to fly.

Fat Shark’s 101 kit is made to not only get new users into FPV but also shepherd them into later stages of advanced flight. To that end, each component is independently upgradeable:

The Recon box goggles work on 5.8 Ghz and can be upgraded to professional grade Dominator V3 or HD3 goggles.
Using the Fly Sky protocol, the Shark Radio can be replaced by any upgraded Fly Sky radio
Any quad using the Fly Sky protocol can replace the Shark Quad and will work directly with the Shark Radio and the Recon box goggles.

The company says it is entirely possible that the winner of the 2018 MultiGP Championships could fly with Recon goggles, a custom quad and the Shark Radio or any combination of the three. How the pilot chooses to grow into the sport entirely depends on what components are upgraded and when.

Initial units are expected to ship to retailers in mid-January.
