More Layoffs Coming At JAL

170 Pilots, Flight Attendants To Be Let Go By Friday

Japan Airlines plans to idle as many as 170 pilots, flight attendants and other employees, according to news reports.

The airline said Tuesday that it will lay off 80 pilots, 60 FA's, and 30 other personnel as part of what it describes as a "rehabilitation plan."  The company called the reduction in workforce "unavoidable," and the move would be official as of Friday.

The French news service AFP reports that only about 30 employees reportedly applied for a voluntary early retirement program. The company had hoped that as many as 200 would take advantage of the deal. The airline officially declared bankruptcy in January or 2010, but has continued flying while attempting to re-structure under court protection.

JAL cut about 16,000 employees and sold off subsidiaries earlier this year in an attempt to return to financial solvency.
