Pilot Fatally Injured While Towing Baseball Team Advertising Banner

Two-Thousand Hour Pilot Aborted Banner Pickup Just Before Crashing

A 34-year-old pilot flying an airplane that regularly tows an advertising banner for the Salt Lake Bees minor league baseball team was fatally injured Saturday when the plane appeared to suffer a mechanical problem while attempting to pick up the banner.

Witnesses told the Deseret News that Quinn Falk was taking off about 1700 local time Saturday from South Valley Regional Airport in West Jordan, UT when the accident occurred. They say he successfully picked up the banner, but the aircraft appeared to immediately lose power. Falk reportedly released the banner, but the aircraft nosedived into the ground and caught fire. Police Captain Dan Gallagher said Falk likely died on impact.

Falk reportedly had about 2,000 hours flying time. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
