Meteor Fireballs Near Madrid Airports

Spectacular Fireball Lights Up Night Sky Near Barajas Airport and Torrejon Air Force Base

Luis Serrano, an emergency services telephone operator in Madrid, could not have expected what happened in Madrid, Spain this past Thursday.

"We received three calls and know of several others who called about an enormous ball of fire just before midnight on Thursday," said Serrano to the Associated Press.

The media also received reports of the object, which manifested itself vertically between two major airports in Spain, the Barajas International Airport and the Spanish Air Force base in Torrejon.

Officials at the Barajas Airport public relations office had no comment on the incident, and the military at Torrejn reacted in a similar manner. At press time, there were no reports as to whether or not someone had found an actual meteorite. The lack of evidence on the ground would suggest the object burned up in the atmosphere.
