Aero-TV: uAvionix Technologies Connect Present and Future

Blazing Trails Through the Regulatory Jungle

The dawning age of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is a metaphorical wilderness contemporaneously abundant in reward and risk. The business of moving through any wilderness, metaphorical or actual, is a complex and delicate one, requiring temperance, circumspection, and courage in equal measure.

Of the technological trail-blazers arrayed upon Advanced Air Mobility’s vanguard, few are as consistently forward-thinking and successful as uAvionix, the Montana-based aerospace technology concern founded in 2015 for purpose of advancing the integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS).

In addition to eminently reliable, surprisingly affordable ADS-B solutions for manned and unmanned aircraft, uAvionix offers a host of ingenious technologies by which the entirety of the world’s air-going contraptions benefit. Among the nifty gadgets conceived of and crafted by uAvionix’s boffins is muLTElink, an airborne, 4G communication radio for the company’s SkyLine Command and Control (C2) Network.

muLTElink enhances an Unmanned Air Vehicle’s (UAV) ability to roam across multiple ground stations without latency or risk of lost link. Avoiding lost link scenarios is critical to the Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) capability salient to the maturation, implementation, and ultimate success of the AAM sector.

muLTElink allows for seamless and lossless switching between one radio type and another. For example, LTE coverage may work very well under 400-feet AGL in a given location, but as a UAV transitions to higher altitudes or more rural locations, the need arises to switch to an alternate link, such as C-Band, to maintain positive control of the aircraft. SkyLine monitors and records comprehensive in-flight data for operators to prove platform and infrastructure integrity.

In November 2022, uAvionix was awarded a contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for multiple end-to-end demonstrations of a Frequency Assignment Manager (FAM) as a component of the company’s SkyLine Command and Control Communications Service Provider (C2CSP) management platform.

The requested, large-scale demonstration will enable a Frequency Management Organization (FMO) operating the SkyLine Platform to assign available frequencies within the internationally recognized UAS C-Band Command and Non-Payload Control (CNPC) range of 5030-5091MHz to Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) equipped with CNPC radios. To meet its contractual obligations, uAvionix will leverage constituent technologies of its SkyLine C2CSP platform and SkyLink CNPC radios. Through its contract with uAvionix, the FAA seeks to demonstrate and verify real-world operations of dynamically allocated FAA protected spectra for UAS operations.

Aero-TV is a production of the Internationally syndicated Aero-News Network. Seen worldwide by hundreds of thousands of aviators and aviation adherents, ANN's Aero-TV has produced over 5000 aviation and feature programs, including nearly 2000 episodes of our daily aviation news program, AIRBORNE UNLIMITED, currently hosted by Holland Lee. Now in its third decade of operation, parent company Aero-News Network, has the most aggressive and intensive editorial profile of any aviation news organization and has published nearly a half-million news and feature stories since its inception -- having pioneered the online 24/7 aviation new-media model that so many have emulated.
