500th PT-6 E Series Engine Rolls off the Line

2019 Introduction Becoming a Fast Favorite on the Turboprop Scene

It may seem a bit silly to have a favorite engine in the aviation world, with so many stalwart classics to choose from, but for enjoyers of smaller, more accessible aircraft, the Pratt & Whitney PT-6 series probably finds a spot on the top 10 no matter what.

Sure, among dozens of classic warbird powerplants and trusty little piston mills, a turboprop engine may seem like a boring addition, but the PT-6 has remained a highly refined, ultimately reliable offering that has grown to hold a near monopoly on the market. The PT-6 is so reliable, in fact, it's basically rendered the twin aircraft market obsolete, with most manufacturers turning to single-engine installations to make the most of its relatively economical and bulletproof performance.

The E-Series, as Pratt & Whitney designates their latest and greatest version, recently shipped out the 500th unit at their Lethbridge, Canada production line. The engines have mostly been delivered to Daher for their TBM 960, and Pilatus for use in their PC-12 NGX. Since being released in 2019, the E-Series family has racked up more than 200,000 hours of flight time, no small feat for a smaller general aviation engine. Its revisions allow for improved fuel efficiency and electrical governance, to the point it has a single-lever integrated prop and engine control. Since being introduced 60+ years back, the PT6 family has gotten 4 times more powerful, with a 50% power-to-weight improvement. Best of all, Pratt & Whitney managed to tack on a 20% fuel economy improvement, too.
