Taiwanese Pilot Suspended After Failing Breath Test

Sir, Put Down The Beer And Come With Me

The pilot of a China Airlines Airbus A-340 about to fly from Anchorage (AK) to New York (NY) last week didn't even make it onto the aircraft.

The reason?

Authorities in Anchorage say he failed an alcohol breath test.  Adding insult to injury, the captain was also found to be carrying an opened alcoholic beverage bottle in his carry-on luggage.

An airport security screener noticed the man smelled of alcohol, prompting the issuance of a breath test that revealed his blood-alcohol level above state and FAA limits.

Here's The Catch...

The FAA is investigating the incident, as is China Airlines. But since the pilot is certificated in Taiwan, the FAA can't suspend or revoke his license.

Frank Chen, general manager for the airline's Alaska operations says the pilot was suspended the day of the incident and sent back that day to Taipei.
