ZeroAvia Reaches FAA Certification Milestone

Receives G-1 For Its 600kW Electric Propulsion System

Everett, Washington-based ZeroAvia announced it reached consensus on the Certification Basis for its 600 kW electric propulsion system (EPS) with the FAA, receiving its G-1 Issue Paper that formally confirmed agreement with its contents. This is a critical step in the certification process where the FAA lays out airworthiness and environmental regulations for a new aircraft design.

The G-1 is a key landmark for new aircraft designs that tell the manufacturer all the specifics for full certification. ZeroAvia is progressing toward certifying its first full hydrogen-electric powertrain, of which the EPS is a core component, with the Civil Aviation Authority of Great Britain, and the G-1 allows the company to validate its design requirements.

The 600 kW EPS consists of four ZeroAvia 200 kW continuous bidirectional inverters converting DC power to AC to supply ZeroAvia’s direct drive motor, capable of 2,200 rpm. The 600 kW EPS can be used in battery, hybrid, and fuel cell electric fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft as well as UAVs.

Val Miftakhov, Founder and CEO of ZeroAvia said, “While hydrogen-electric is the future for the majority of commercial routes in existence today, advances in electric propulsion technology and novel aircraft design are opening up an exciting range of new shorter range, electric air mobility applications.

“Certifying and selling our 600kW electric propulsion system helps ZeroAvia expand our addressable market and increase our impact in pursuit of a clean future of flight. With nearly 3000 orders for our full powertrains and components, achieving a first certification will be a monumental achievement for our team and for the aviation industry, unlocking clean, efficient and affordable air transport all over the world.”
