Aero-TV At XPO21: Aergility Profiles The ATLIS Autonomous Hybrid Electric UAV

Combines The Efficiency Of A Fixed-Wing Aircraft, With The Vertical Takeoff Of A Gyrocopter

Aergility brought their newest ATLIS model to XPOnential 2021, and James Vander Mey, CEO, took some time to give our ANN Chief Editor Jim Campbell the rundown on how things are going. The Atlis will be an autonomous hybrid electric unmanned aerial vehicle for long range cargo delivery to hazardous or difficult terrain.

Vander Mey explains the use case for the UAV, saying:

“One of the things in the U.S. we talk about is the last mile of delivery, how difficult it is, and there’s some estimates that 28% of the cost comes from the last mile. When you go to the developing world, like Africa, it’s really the last 100 miles, because they don’t have the infrastructure to be able to get anything there at all. So the real opportunity in those areas is to be able to a paradigm breaker and actually come in and show that you don’t need that infrastructure to actually deliver cargo to the villages, or wherever, because it can be done from a point of supply directly to where you need it to go, and be done very economically.”

The Atlis combines the efficiency of a fixed-wing aircraft, with the vertical takeoff performance of a gyrocopter. The successful testing of partial-scale proof-of-concept aircraft has been promising, and the concept of “managed autogyration” the Atlis is pioneering will continue into the full-scale demonstrator. Following flight testing, development on cargo loading, carriage, and use will continue.
