More than 50 children and their parents visited members of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels team at Miramar, Calif., Oct. 14. Retired Lt. Karen A. Brabandt, event organizer, said this was the third time she has planned an opportunity for children to meet the Blue Angels.

“This is really set up because I think it’s great for the kids to get exposure to pilots and the crew," she said. "The Blue Angels are great role models, showing kids they can be whatever they want to be."

Aviation Support Equipment Technician 2nd Class (SW) James Whittaker, crew chief, said meeting children was the favorite part of his job.

“Our number one fan base is kids,” said Whittaker. “These children are going to be my replacement sooner or later, so it’s great to show them a little about what I do.”

The children attending the event received free posters, inflatable jets, breakfast and watched a Blue Angels movie presentation followed by a question and answer session with the pilot for Blue Angel Number Four, Lt. Cmdr. Max McCoy.

“Interacting with children is so much fun,” said McCoy. “You never have to worry about not getting interesting questions to answer. It is always my pleasure to see kids and talk to them.”

Marine Corps Master Sgt. Jeff Belcher brought his three sons to the event to give them a chance to meet a Navy pilot.

“The boys love this. They are having so much fun being here today,” said Belcher.

Brabandt said her team had less than four weeks to organize the event, but it was worth the effort.

“We will certainly be doing this next year. With more time, we’ll be able to get more people involved,” said Brabandt. “Everyone had so much fun this year, and I can’t wait for next time.” [ANN Salutes Journalist 2nd Class Megan T. Figuly, Fleet Public Affairs Center Pacific]
