Smoldering Laptop Forces Emergency Landing

Computer Smokes, Slacks Sizzle

Something stank aboard a Virgin Blue 737-700 late Thursday.

"Cabin crew had noticed a slight electrical smell and advised the captain," said Virgin Blue spokeswoman Heather Jeffrey in an interview with Australia's Nine News. The aircraft, on a trip from Sydney to Coolangatta was a half-hour from its destination when the crew decided there might be some sort of electrical fire on board. The pilot reportedly called ahead to the airport for emergency services as the cabin crew got ready for the worst.

But shortly before landing, the smell went away. Coincidentally, so did all laptops and other portable electronics. That's when a passenger aboard the aircraft notified the cabin crew his computer might have been the culprit.

The aircraft made an uneventful landing at 0932 local time. It was checked over thoroughly -- but mechanics found nothing wrong. There's no word on what happened to the man with the laptop...
