MagniX Releases New Line of Electric Helicopter Engines

HeliStorm Engines Aim to Provide More Power With Less Weight

MagniX, a leading innovator in sustainable propulsion tech, recently debuted its latest line of electric engines. The HeliStorm is geared towards helicopters and can operate at around 6,000-7,000 RPM while being lighter in weight than older models.

“The helicopter market represents a tremendous opportunity for magniX, as the strengths of our technology align well with the market need,” explained magniX CEO Reed Macdonald. “magniX’s HeliStorm engines expand upon our existing world leading capabilities and deliver a step change in performance, reliability, and value for our customers. We look forward to bringing our innovative technology to another segment of the aviation industry.”

The HeliStorm engines are used alongside magniX’s Samson batteries to generate a fully electric power source. They operate at 6,000 to 7,000 RPM, with the first engine in the series providing up to 330 kW of power while weighing only 75 kg.

MagniX designed the HeliStorm series to fit anything from light single engines to larger hybrid-electric twin engines. While countless helicopters fall into this range, magniX is primarily working to build its repertoire of collaborations with Robinson Helicopters.

A four-seat Robinson R44 took its first fully electric flight with magniX’s magni250 electric propulsion unit on June 4, 2022, at the Alamitos Army Airfield in California. The electric R44 (eR44) proceeded with development under Lung Biotechnology to transport organs for transplant surgeries.
