Airborne 11.22.21: Electric Record!, LA Attacks Airport, GAMA 3Q/21

Also: US Av Fatalities Down, Cathay Fires 3, Tecnam PVolt, Rocket Lab

The folks at Roll-Royce tell ANN that they believe their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is the world’s fastest, setting three new world records.

They have submitted data to the FAI – that on 16 November 2021, the aircraft reached a top speed of 345.4 mph over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 132 mph. In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 330 mph over 15 km – 182 mph faster than the previous record – and broke the fastest time to climb to 3000 metres by 60 seconds with a time of 202 seconds. California’s Whiteman Airport is facing its end after a unanimous vote from the anti-aviation, anti-progress Los Angeles city council. A petition has begun in the local area in the hopes that their decision could be forestalled, but like many victims of creeping urban sprawl, the chances are not good that it will remain. GAMA released the third quarter report on GA shipments and billings, showing strong increases in 2021.
Turboprop, business jet, and helicopter deliveries saw increases during the first 9 months of the year, with near parity in piston airplane shipments. Overall, statistics for the industry have improved across the board. Piston aircraft sales in 2021 only lagged from 2020 numbers by 6 airplanes, less than 1% of the total, at 895 sold in 2021. Comparing the numbers to 2019, piston aircraft sales for Q3 had reached 877 units, 98% of 2021's totals through November. Similar trends occur in other categories, with turboprop deliveries besting 2020 totals by almost 41%. while only falling short of 2019 sales by 2 aircraft. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
